United ambition: How 39-year-old Brian Larkin built an oil company from scratch

After just five years, United Oil & Gas is producing oil in Egypt and has the rights to explore 32,500 square kilometres off the south coast of Jamaica. It also has interests in the UK and Italy. And its CEO and founder Brian Larkin says this is just the start for the listed explorer.
For over a year Brian Larkin relentlessly flew back and forth to London, desperately trying to drum up support. Week after week, the north Dubliner faced rejection as the then 34-year old tried to get his fledgling oil exploration company United Oil & Gas up and running. Named after Larkin’s favourite football team, Manchester United, it didn’t have a single asset. It only had a business plan knocked up on his laptop during a spell of bad weather around Christmas 2014.
